In Japan, people enjoy a special cake for Christmas!

It might be not popular in overseas but this Christmas cake is an indispensable part to enjoy Christmas in Japan.

Children love Christmas cake and so did I.

You might think, “But it includes eggs and dairy products” and that’s true.
Most of the Christmas cakes include eggs and dairy products but the situation has changed recently!

Now I can see a wide variety of vegan Christmas cake here in Japan!

I’ll introduce you some of them!



BIOKURA

BIOKURA is a macrobiotic specialty shop.

Not only cakes but rice, drink, sweets, snacks, etc., they sell.

As it focuses on macrobiotics, they also use organically grown vegetables and fruits.

Christmas Cake of Rice Flour and Strawberry

This Christmas Cake of Rice Flour and Strawberry is made with rice flour from Yamanashi Prefecture and strawberry.

Vegan cake made without using animal ingredients and dairy products.

Soy milk cream and homemade raspberry jam are sandwiched in the sponge.
Choco crust with nuts is laid on the base.

8tablish

8ablish is a famous and popular vegan cafe among vegan and vegetarian people.

It was originally started as Cafe 8 and I’ve been to this Cafe 8 about 15 years ago a couple of times.

They offer menus using mainly organic ingredients at 8ablish.
So, its Christmas cake does not use white sugar, artificial flavorings and any animal ingredients.

Like the Christmas cake of BIOKURA, Christmas cake of 8tablish is very exclusive.

White Kouglof of Pistachio and Lemon

The sponge of the Kouglof looks a light green and that’s because it is made mixed with pistachio.
Simmered lemons that don’t use wax and preservative are added to it and baked.

Its top is coated with homemade white chocolate and decorated with hazelnuts, pistachios and slices of lemon.

Main ingredients are Tofu and rice flour.
For sweetness, beet sugar is used.

Organic cacao powder and organic cacao mass are used for the Gâteau au Chocolat.
And choco cream is added to it.

Choco chips you can see on the top are cacao nibs.
You can enjoy light bitterness.

This Christmas cake is made with rice flour, organic coconut milk and Tofu.
For sweetness, organic maple syrup, coconut sugar and organic agave syrup are used.

Natural Cake Fukuro

Christmas cakes of Natural Cake Fukuro don’t use any animal ingredients including eggs and dairy products.

For food additives, only baking powder without aluminum and natural vanilla essence are used but no other additives are used for the cakes.

Domestic fruits in season are used.

For sweetness, beet sugar, rice syrup, and syrup are used.

And the owner herself makes the cakes one by one by hand.

That’s an interesting combination!

The sponge of tofu and cheese includes a lot of apples, too!

The owner says it has a rich taste but not heavy.
She uses miso (Japanese fermented soybean paste) for it, so it makes a rich taste!

I’m curious about this homemade cake, too.

KICK BACK CAFE

I saw this KICK BACK CAFE at the Vegan Grumet Festival last year (2019).
They were popular at the festival.

It is not a vegan or vegetarian cafe but they sell vegan and vegetarian dishes as well.

This choco cake uses monk fruit (Lo Han Guo) for the sweetness.

Monk fruit once became popular in Japan for the effects on health and beauty.

This Christmas cake was made mixing with monk fruit and rich choco cream made of organic coconut cream.

For the sponge, domestic flour is used.

Takaki Healthcare Foods

Takaki Healthcare Foods makes cake and bread focused on those who have allergies to certain foods.

You might surprise but they also sell vegan Christmas cakes of Japanese popular heroes among children such as masked rider and PreCure.

Many stores in Japan sell their cakes, too.

Their cake is made by an independent manufacturing line and delivered after the inspection on allergy.

Fruit cake without eggs, dairy products and wheat.
Instead, rice flour and soy milk are used.

The rice flour is from the rice called Koshihikari made in Uonuma in Nigata Prefecture.
Koshihikari made in Uonuma is very famous and popular for its high-quality rice.

A variety of fruits such as diced mango, diced peach, grape and pear are used.

They say this is the most popular Christmas cake among all the Christmas cakes of Takaki Healthcare Foods.

This is the popular Christmas cake among children.

Every year, this Chara Deco Christmas series is sold.
Last year, Masked Rider Zero One was popular.
And this year, 2020, new Masked Rider aired on TV, which is, Masked Rider Saber.

Peach and soy milk cream are sandwiched in the sponge made from rice flour of Uonuma in Niigata Prefecture.
And topped with fruits such as peach, raspberry, pear, grape, etc.

The original item of Chara Deco comes with the cake, too.

I think this Masked Rider is popular especially among boys.
Actually, I myself was into Masked Rider when I was a child.

PuriCure is popular among girls!

This Christmas cake of PuriCure is also popular and sold every year.

Like the Christmas cake of Masked Rider Saber, its sponge is made with domestic rice flour and sandwiches peach and soy milk cream.

No eggs, dairy products and wheat are included as well.

It also comes with an original item of Chara Deco.

Even children with allergies can enjoy the Christmas cake of Chara Deco Series and that’s nice!

7-ELEVEN

I think I don’t need to introduce 7-ELEVEN as everyone knows.

I didn’t know that but they also sell Christmas cakes without using specific raw materials such as wheat, milk, egg, peanut, etc. that is, vegan cake.

What they sell is made by Takaki Healthcare Foods.
So, this is a consignment sale.

CHAYA Macrobiotics is a very famous restaurant among those who work on a macrobiotic diet.

In Tokyo, there are 4 restaurants of CHAYA Macrobiotics.

I can find even the curry of CHAYA Macrobiotics at a convenience store like Natural Lawson nowadays and that is surprising!

Their cakes are made based on the concept of macrobiotics without using eggs, dairy products, white sugar, etc.

The strawberries used in the cakes are grown using organic fertilizer.

This is a chocolate version.
Tofu and maple syrup are used for the sponge.

Between the layers of the sponge, soy milk vanilla cream is sandwiched.

And actually more variety there are, I just introduced some of them here.

When I was a child, I’ve never seen Christmas cakes without using eggs or dairy products.
But the situation has changed over the decade.

Now this time of the year, mid-December, you can see so many Christmas cakes on the glass showcase of every sweets shop in Japan.

Just looking at them makes me happy and maybe so you do.
