Royal Host is one of the big chain family restaurants in Japan and has been offering vegetarian and vegan menu items for quite some time now although most of the menus are non-vege.

I’ve tried them a few times myself.

Until recently, they also offered vegetarian lasagna and Thai-style rice dishes, but when I visited the other day, they had already been removed from the menu, which was a shame.

However, the vegetable curry is still available!

Here, I would like to introduce veggie curry which I had at Royal Host.

What is NIKUVEGE Vegetable Curry & Millet Rice

NIKUVEGE Vegetable Curry & Millet Rice

NIKUVEGE Vegetable Curry & Mixed Grain Rice is a set menu featuring vegetable curry made with NIKUVEGE, a plant-based meat alternative, and mixed grain rice.

The price is about $10 (1518 yen)(tax included), and the calorie content is 599 calories.

NIKUVEGE is a soy-based meat alternative.
The mixed grain rice includes quinoa and chia seeds.

While this NIKUVEGE Vegetable Curry does not directly use any animal-based ingredients, the kitchen shares cooking utensils and frying oil with animal-based foods, so vegans who are particularly mindful of such details should take note.

To Royal Host

Royal Host

This time, I went to Royal Host, which is located in my neighborhood.
You can find many in Tokyo, or rather all over Japan.

I usually cook for myself, so I rarely go to Royal Host, but I came here just for the veggie curry.

It was around 9 p.m., and since it’s quite far from the station, there weren’t many people, so the staff showed me to a table for four.

When I opened the menu, I found “NIKUVEGE Vegetable Curry & Mixed Grain Rice”!

The curry sauce and rice are served separately, giving it a slightly upscale feel!

I will order it right away.

It was ready in about 10 minutes. NIKUVEGE Vegetable Curry & Mixed Grain Rice!

The rice and curry sauce are served separately, giving it a slightly upscale, hotel-style feel.

I wonder what is this magical lamp-shaped container specifically designed for curry called? After looking it up, I found out it’s called a gravy boat or sauce pot.

The mixed grain rice contains quinoa and chia seeds.

Both quinoa and chia seeds were once popular as nutrient-rich superfoods.

The toppings on the mixed grain rice are eggplant, pumpkin, bell pepper, broccoli, corn, maitake mushrooms, button mushrooms, fried onions, and red cabbage marinate.

It’s packed with ingredients and colorful, isn’t it?

I can see one cherry tomato in the curry sauce.

Now, I pour the curry sauce on top and give it a try.

NIKUVEGE Vegetable Curry & Millet Rice

Yeah, it’s tasty!
It’s spicy, but even I, who can’t eat anything spicier than medium, can eat it without problem.

The curry sauce is slightly thick and contains soy meat, but it has the same texture as real ground meat.

The curry sauce went well with the mixed grain rice and vegetables and was tasty.

The fried onions also had a sweet onion flavor, and the cherry tomatoes added a nice touch of acidity.

Even with a curry made only with vegetables, I was able to enjoy a deep flavor with just the right amount of spice.

Summary

Currently, the only veggie menu item at Royal Host is the NIKUVEGE Vegetable Curry & Mixed Grain Rice!

I was satisfied!

If you weren’t told, you wouldn’t even realize it was made entirely with vegetables, as the flavor is rich and satisfying.

However, it’s a bit shame that the previous vegetarian options, such as the soy meat lasagna and Thai-style rice, which weren’t completely vegetarian but still offered vegetarian options, are no longer available.

I would personally be happy if they introduced new vegetarian menu items in the future.
