Ebisu has all kinds of vegan sweets and restaurants!
From hemp-based restaurants to falafel shops, even vegan taiyaki!
I couldn’t decide where to go, but this time I visited Medel deli which offers vegan smoothies and vegan bowls!
All menu items are made without any white sugar or artificial additives.
Some items use organic milk and domestic raw honey, but most menu items are vegan-friendly.
Check the vegan mark on the menu before ordering just in case.
Here, I’d like to share what the actual shop looked like and the menu items I ordered.
Access

JR Ebisu Station is the nearest station.
Exit Ebisu Station West Exit 2 and turn right along the street directly in front of you.
After about 50 meters, you’ll reach a traffic light; turn right here.
Continue straight for about 150 meters until you reach an intersection.
Medel deli is located on the left diagonal corner of the intersection.

To Medel deli

Exiting the west exit of Ebisu Station, I checked Google Maps but still got a bit lost.
Whenever I think of Ebisu, I always head towards Ebisu Garden, so this shop is in the opposite direction.
Still, it’s less than 500 meters away, so about a 5-minute walk.
While wandering around, it took me over 10 minutes instead of 5, but I finally arrived at Medel deli.

Inside

The shop is compact, with a few table seats that can accommodate about 10 people.

The chairs and tables are made from reclaimed driftwood and scrap materials, while the walls use diatomaceous earth mixed with hemp stems.
By the way, I could find wooden benches outside that you can sit there although there were no tables.

On the right side of the entrance, various organic and additive-free foods and products were being sold.

Sandwiches and vegan muffins were also displayed in the storefront showcase.

Inside the shop, there were a few regulars here and there, chatting amiably with the staff.
It has the feel of a shop deeply rooted in the community.
Order Hemp Banana Smoothie and Amazake Matcha Muffin!

The shop’s signature menu items are various smoothies and smoothie bowls.
There were about 15 types of smoothies and 9 types of smoothie bowls.
With so many choices, it’s hard to decide.
I wasn’t hungry, but I was thirsty, so I decided to order a smoothie this time.
When I asked the staff, she told me that the most popular item is Banana Smoothie.
They also said that Acai Smoothie is popular, too.
But I’m personally curious about the unusual smoothies like hemp and moringa.
I was torn which one to get, but ultimately decided to order Hemp Banana Smoothie.
I was also curiout about Amazake Matcha Muffin displayed in the storefront showcase, so I ordered it too!
Amazake is a traditional sweet Japanese drink made from fermented rice.
I sat down at a two-person table.
It’s nice that they have a basket case to put our belongings in.

After a short wait, it was ready: Hemp Smoothie.
They make it fresh after you order, and you pick it up at the counter.

Paper straws? —no, grass straws are provided, making it eco-friendly.

Well then, I’ll have Hemp Banana Smoothie.

Yeah, it’s delicious!
It’s easier to drink than I thought!
Before drinking, I wondered if hemp might have a grassy taste since it’s a type of cannabis? Or maybe a slightly peculiar flavor? But it wasn’t like that at all.
Perhaps it was because the natural sweetness of the banana really came through.
It’s delicious and goes down smoothly!
The hemp nuts on top were a great accent too!
The grass straw was sturdy and easy to drink through.
I decided to eat the Amazake Matcha Muffin at home.

This muffin wasn’t overly rich either; I could enjoy its natural sweetness and the flavor of Matcha.
Looking it up later, I found out it was a muffin made using only the sweetness of amazake, with absolutely no added sugar.
The matcha used was organic matcha from Nishio City, Aichi Prefecture, making it a truly dedicated muffin.
Summary
Vegan smoothie was absolutely delicious!
Honestly, I could have easily had another one!
The warm, wood-filled atmosphere inside the shop was relaxing and pleasant!
The staff were kind and very pleasant.
It’s no wonder some people keep coming back!
This time I visited on a weekday evening, so it was quiet, but I imagine it must be packed on holidays.
Next time I’d like to try the moringa smoothie or smoothie bowl—they sound intriguing!
