I had some business in the Roppongi area, so I decided to drop by a vegan shop while I was there!
At first I was looking up vegan cafes and restaurants, but then I discovered a vegan bakery in Azabu Juban!
I had no idea there was a vegan bakery in Azabu Juban!
I was curious that I went straight there and bought some bread, so I’d like to tell you my impressions!
Access

The nearest station is Azabu-juban Station on the Toei Oedo Line or Tokyo Metro Namboku Line.
The closest exit is Exit 1 of Azabu-juban Station on the Tokyo Metro Namboku Line.
If you exit from Exit 1 and turn around the corner (the street behind the main street in front of you), you will find Te cor gentil.
It is about 100 meters on foot.
What is Te cor gentil?

Te cor gentil is a bakery that offers bread made from only plant-based ingredients, without using any eggs, butter, milk, honey, etc.
They use soy or oat milk instead.
They also use mainly Hokkaido-produced Yumechikara flour, as well as rye and organic wholemeal flour.
The name of the shop, “Te cor gentil”, is a combination of the French words Terre (Earth), Corps (Body), and Gentil (Gentle).
The concept is to face environmental issues and be kind to the earth, animals and human bodies.
The shop opened in Azabu Juban in October 2022 and is now a subsidiary of CHRISTINA JAPAN, a company that sells the Israeli skincare brand Christina.
To Te cor gentil

I walked from the Roppongi area this time, but it takes about 2 minutes on foot from Azabu-juban Station.
When I arrive in front of the shop, it’s stylish!
As expected of a shop in Azabu area.
It looks more like a cafe than a bakery.
In fact, there are tables and benches in front of the shop where you can eat.

Inside of Te cor gentil

When I entered the store, most of the bread had already sold out ^_^;
I understood it as it was also past 3pm.
I wanted to buy the An Butter and Croissants, which seemed to be popular, but they had already sold out, which was a shame.
But there were still several other types of bread left, so I’m gonna pick one out of them!

Menu of Te cor gentil

There are always about 20 to 25 types of bread on the menu.
That is, as long as you visit at a best time, not like after 3 pm like I did.
There are An Butter, Croissant, Pistachio Croissant, Mont Blanc Croissant, Cream Bun Tea-flavored Quiny Aman, Fresh Chocolate, Doughnut, Cinnamon Doughnut, Fresh Doughnut, Fruit Danish, Maple Butter, Honey Butter Toast, Olive, Curry Bun, Cheese Curry Bun, Fried Noodles Bun, Aosa Weaweed Salt Bun, Bun, Brown Rice bun, Croquette Burger, Tomato and Cheese Pizza, Tomato Flomage, Tandoori Chicken Sandwich, etc.
They say The most popular breads are the An Butter, Croissant and Pistachio Croissant.
When I get there, they were all sold out ^_^;
The prices are roughly between 300 yen and 800 yen (Between $1.5 and $5).
It may seem a little more expensive than a regular Japanese bakery for ordinary people, but it’s worth it because they use only domestic wheat and are completely vegan!
Bought Vegan Breads!

Although many of the breads were already sold out, there were still many attractive breads on display.
“Croquette Burgers and Doughnuts are also popular.”
The staff told me.
She said she also have seasonal Sweet Potato Doughnuts at the moment.
Wow, Tandoori Chicken Sandwich made entirely from vegetables!
I’m curious!
After much deliberation, I decided to buy the Tandoori Chicken Sandwich, Croquette Burger, Altamura, Sweet Potato Doughnut, and Plain Doughnut!
I bought five and the total price was about $15 (2,360 yen).
I think this may be the first time in my life that I’ve spent over $15 on bread alone!
Or rather, I can’t eat all this at once by myself, so I’ll go home and eat them over a couple of times.
Tandoori Chicken Sandwiche

The price of Tandoori Chicken Sandwich is about $4.5 (700 yen)(including tax).
First time to try a vegan tandoori chicken sandwich!
It looks really filling!
Or rather, it feels heavy when I hold it in my hand!
Tomato and purple cabbage were sandwiched under tandoori chicken.
When I tried it, the baguette had a chewy texture.
The tandoori chicken has a curry flavor with a kick of spice!
It has a chewy like real chicken!
It seems that this vegan chicken is soaked in yogurt.
It also goes well with the acidity of the tomato.
The level of reproduction is amazing, and as expected, the volume is also amazing, and I was a kind of full after eating this one!
Altamura

The price of Altamura is about $2 (300 yen)(including tax).
I was attracted by the appearance and thought it would go well with any dish, so I bought it!
As you can see, this bread is also quite heavy.
The outside is crispy and the inside is soft.
It seems to be made with semolina wheat.
The taste is plain!
I was able to enjoy the natural flavor of the wheat.
Because it is a simple-tasting bread, I think it goes well with curry, stew, soup, etc.
Croquette Burger

The price of Croquette Burger is about $3.5 (550 yen)(including tax).
This is also hearty croquette burger!
Since it’s all vegan, this croquette also doesn’t use eggs or other ingredients to bind the batter.
It has tartar sauce, croquette and purple cabbage sandwiched inside.
This tartar sauce is homemade.
When I eat it, the rich sauce and tartar sauce go well with the croquette!
It’s tasty!
They say this has been a popular item since the shop opened.
As it took time to go back and eat, the cabbage and the croquettes themselves became a little limp, but they would have been even tastier if I had reheated them in the oven!
Sweet Potato An Doughnut

Sweet Potato An Doughnut was about $3(480 yen)(including tax).
This is a doughnut that was only available for two weeks, and happened to be on sale when I went there.
The whipped cream is probably soy whipped cream, and it’s lightly sweet and easy on the stomach.
The doughnut was filled with plenty of sweet potato paste and whipped cream.
It’s not just a token amount, but there’s plenty in the parts you can’t see too, which is wonderful!
It wasn’t too sweet, and had a natural sweetness that was delicious!
It seems that pumpkin doughnuts were also available for a limited time in October!
Plain Doughnut

Plain Doughnut is about $2(330 yen)(including tax).
It’s a fairly large doughnut.
There were also cinnamon doughnuts, but I decided to go for the simple plain doughnut first.
When I eat it, it’s a doughnut that has a soft but chewy texture in it.
They say it is made by mixing domestic flour and focaccia dough.
That’s why it has this slightly unique texture.
It uses beet sugar, so it has a natural, gentle sweetness.
The doughnut was more oily than I expected, but because it wasn’t made with animal fat, it was light and didn’t sit heavy in my stomach.
What was a little disappointing was that it had completely cooled down and was a little stale by the time I got home.
Well, that’s just the way it goes.
I thought that the freshly-made doughnut would probably be really delicious.
Summary
The bread had a robust flavor, and it was hard to believe that it was made without using any dairy products or animal ingredients!
Even if you wander in and eat the bread without knowing it’s a vegan bakery, you wouldn’t notice the quality unless you were told!
Each bread is also very filling, so I was very satisfied!
I can find bakeries that use natural yeast sometimes, but vegan bakeries are still quite rare here in Japan.
If I have the chance to go to Azabu Juban again, I wanna buy An Butter and Croissant next time!
